Naturalization and U.S. Citizenship

General Requirements to Qualify for U.S. Citizenship Through Naturalization:

  • Lawful permanent resident for five years (three years if married to a US citizen).
  • Physically present in the United States for at least one half of the three or five year time period described above.
  • Must be a person of good moral character during the time period described above, but USCIS may be able to look beyond those years.
  • Agree with the principles of the United States Constitution.
  • Must be willing to (a) bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law, or (b) to perform non-combat service in the Armed Service when required by the law, or (c) to perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law.
  • Pass a civics and English language test. There are exceptions based on (a) age, (b) length of permanent residence, and (c) presence of physical or developmental disability or mental impairment.

* There are waivers of certain requirements for members of the Armed Forces.
